This week, a new beta version of “Firefighter” was released, an action game for Atari 8-bit that puts you in the role of a firefighter battling intense blazes in an industrial setting.

Firefighter version 0.1-beta10, developed in C by Bill Kendrick (USA), introduces a title screen, built-in help text, and a 10-entry high-score table. Since beta 9, graphics and gameplay mechanics have been refined. The game offers 12 levels where you must extinguish fires and rescue workers trapped inside the burning building. Success requires both precision and strategy.

You control a firefighter equipped with an unlimited supply of extinguishing agent. Spray the fire to put it out, but be cautious—flames spread rapidly! Locate and rescue trapped workers, who, disoriented by smoke and fear, will wander aimlessly unless you guide them to safety.

You can push crates, oil barrels, and workers, or use an axe to break crates. However, be careful—damaging pipes can trigger additional gas leaks. Fire spreads faster when it reaches crates and causes explosions upon contact with oil barrels and gas leaks, adding to the challenge.

The game is best played with a dual-joystick controller, similar to arcade classics like “Robotron: 2084” and “Smash TV”. One joystick controls movement, while the other directs the spray. You can swap joystick functions based on preference. Alternatively, a single-joystick setup is supported, where holding down the fire button while moving allows spraying, though you’ll be unable to move while doing so.

The latest beta of “Firefighter” delivers hours of intense, strategic gameplay for fans of Atari XL/XE titles, challenging both your reflexes and tactical thinking.
