Version 1.02 of "Bubble Bobble" for Atari 8-bit, developed by Krzysztof "Vega" Gora (Poland), continues to be perfected with a series of adjustments and new features that reinforce its quality and playability.
Among the most significant changes, the flickering that occurred when loading levels on real hardware has been eliminated. This advancement has been made possible by the use of XBIOS, which allows the ATARI OS operating system to be dispensed with. Additionally, bugs affecting the high score scoreboard's updating during gameplay have been fixed, ensuring that the results accurately reflect player performance.The instruction screen has also received attention. Now, thanks to the work of "S1m," it features an optimized layout that improves its clarity. In parallel, occasional graphical glitches have been fixed, such as colored lines that momentarily appeared over player characters. Additionally, users of PAL systems will notice an improvement in the scrolling of the boards, which now occurs every four lines instead of eight, a difference that optimizes the visual experience on these configurations.
As for audio updates, two new effects have been added to accompany the collection of key items such as the shoe icon or the bottle of firepower. The score recording screen also now displays an ellipsis, indicating how many characters can be entered when typing a name.
The game continues to display its version on the home screen, a feature reintroduced in this update. Although the .car version for ATARIMAX is still in the testing phase, it already includes the ability to save games, a feature that many users have been waiting for. According to the developer, this version will be available soon, along with other minor adjustments to optimize the gaming experience in this format.
With each update, Bubble Bobble reinforces its place as one of the most refined titles for the Atari 8-bit, keeping alive the essence of Taito's classic (1986) while integrating improvements tailored to the expectations of contemporary players.
