The 22nd edition of the Atari Bit Byter User Club (ABBUC) has closed its entries for the 2024 competition, with ten games set to compete in the Software category. The annual event, which celebrates the creativity and dedication of the retro community, features a variety of titles that demonstrate the vitality and diversity of the homebrew scene for Atari 8-bit computers.
Among the entrants is Ruff in Trouble, a side-scrolling platformer and shooter developed by Janusz "Shanti77" Chabowski. This title pays homage to the Amiga classic Ruff 'n' Tumble and reuses the engine from another game by the same author, Trax. Ruff in Trouble was officially unveiled as Ruff'n during the Atari Homebrew Awards 2024 in February and has generated great anticipation among fans. Another contender is “Dimo’s Underworld,” an adventure in which the protagonist, a frog named Dimo, must recover candy stolen by a squirrel who has raided the Greenfoot Kingdom’s candy vault while avoiding monsters and traps. Developed by Thomas “8Bitjunkie” Schulz, Tobias Prinz and Hilton “Elektrofish” Theissen, the game poses an interesting challenge: Dimo must interact with various objects to access locked areas and thus complete his mission.
The first title to be entered into the competition was Frederik “freetz” Holst’s “1K RainBox,” where players must rearrange rainbow tiles using as few moves as possible. Despite taking up less than 1000 bytes, the game surprises by offering a rich visual experience, with over 100 shades and 13 different colors. Another entrant is «Line Runner-24», created by Peter "RetroCoder" Hinz, where the player must run in a horizontal environment and avoid obstacles. Hinz has also entered another game called «Eat-Me!», the gameplay of which has not yet been detailed.

In addition to these, the competition includes titles such as «Infinity» by Peter “Dr. Irata” Prodehl; «Twist of Souls» by Lars “LarsImNetz” Langhans; «Landlord» by Thorsten Helbig; «F-16 Falcon Strike» by “Roeoender”; and «Quixx» by “ABBUC-RAF”. Special mention should be made of «Q.B.Fox» by Martin “Matosimi” Å imecek (Slovakia), which is currently in the verification phase.

The competition promises to be a tight one, with a total prize pool of at least 2850 Euros. Of this sum, 850 Euros will be shared between the top three places, while the remaining 2000 Euros will be distributed proportionally according to the votes received by each game.
