AtariAge forum user Torq is developing “The Woebegone Trail,” a homebrew port of the iconic exploration game “The Oregon Trail” for the Atari 8-bit.
This is an educational travel simulator that teaches players about the life of 19th century pioneers. This new version combines elements from several versions of the original game, particularly the 1985 version for the Apple II and the Mac, with colorful graphics and interactive menus.
Players make tactical decisions during the journey, facing random events that can affect the caravan. The goal is to reach Oregon overcoming all obstacles.
Atari 8-bit computer users have two versions: the first, published by Softswap (a project of the San Mateo County Office of Education and Educators Using Computers) in 1982, was based on the 1971 text-only educational game. The other, by the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium (MECC), was published in the compilation "Expeditions" along with three other programs.
Development of The Woebegone Trail is currently moving forward with the completion of the opening menu, thanks to the support of Paul "Mr. Fish" Fisher. The next step is to implement the ox and cart animations.
As explained on his blogTorq renamed the project "The Woebegon Trail," combining the term "affliction" (for the hardships faced by travelers) with the original name.
