The digital version of the highly anticipated monochrome adventure game Tony: Montezuma's Gold for Atari 8-bit computers will be released at the Pixel Heaven 2024 festival, which will take place from June 7 to 9, 2024 in Warsaw, Poland.
Inspired by the adventures of Polish explorer and filmmaker Tony Halik, who traveled the world documenting ancient civilizations for NBC, "Tony: Montezuma's Gold" invites players to unravel the secrets of the Aztec king's castle, facing traps, dangers and enemies. From nearly 200 games submitted to this year's twelfth edition of Europe's largest independent video game development competition, "Tony: Montezuma's Gold" has been selected as one of twelve finalists for the AMD Pixel Awards Europe 2024, specifically in the "Retro Roots" category.
Developed by Vladimir "Popmilo" Janković (Serbia) and Rafał Dudek (Poland), with music by Michał Brzezicki, this new title has received praise for its gameplay and aesthetics from the AtariOnline and AtariAge communities.
"Popmilo" has revealed that the game will use standard 64k memory, meaning that only one cartridge is needed to run it. Additionally, Janković is considering creating separate single-file versions per level, so that users of cassette-based systems can also enjoy the adventure. On the other hand, Jankovic said that it is not very attractive to run "Tony" on computers with NTSC video mode. "Most screens are very saturated, so the game is not really playable in this format. However, I intend to make a compatible version," he said on the AtariAge forum.
“Tony: Montezuma's Gold” promises to be a delight for both 8-bit nostalgic fans and new players alike, with improved graphics, refined gameplay and a captivating story that will keep you on the edge of your seats.
