Piotr "zaxoniec" Bugaj (Poland) has launched two models of 3.5-inch disk drives for our beloved Atari 8-bit computers.
These hand-crafted drives emulate the look and feel of the classic Atari XF 551 and Atari 1050 floppy drives, offering platform enthusiasts an option for managing their games and software.
Atari XF 351 Floppy Drive: A classic reinvented
The first model, named Atari XF 351, is based on the XF 551 floppy disk drive. It uses a 3.5-inch floppy drive from laptops and a new electronic board. This drive is capable of reading, formatting and writing discs up to 720 KB, supporting ED and DD densities. However, it is not compatible with the Hyper OS operating system.
The case design is 3D printed from light grey ABS, and features an integrated SIO2PC USB interface, allowing for easy connection to Atari 8-bit computers.
The device has been tested under Sparta dos X 4.xx and Mydos 4.53 systems, and works with both double density (DD) and high density (HD) disks. It is priced at £95.00 and can be purchased from SellMyRetro
Atari 1050 Mini: modernity in a classic format
The second model, called the Atari 1050 Mini, is inspired by the robust and popular Atari 1050 player. This project features a new electronic board and a 3D printed case. The unit includes two SIO sockets and a 5 volt power adapter. Like the previous model, it has been tested with Sparta Dos x, MyDos and PicoDos systems, ensuring its functionality.
Although the SIO cable is not included, the unit provides an optimal user experience for Atari 8-bit fans. It is priced at £109.00 and is also available from SellMyRetro
Both models offer an alternative storage solution while maintaining the aesthetics and functionality that fans of Atari 8-bit computers value so much.
