After long hours of work, AtariAge forum user Drunkeneye has released the first beta of "Mafia" for Atari 8-bit computers.
This game is a classic on the C64, developed by Igelsoft in 1986. It is a mix of RPG and turn-based strategy for up to four players.
The story takes place in Chicago during the Prohibition era, where crime thrives and shopkeepers live in fear of raids and blackmail. Initially, the player is an unknown figure who is not taken seriously by shop owners. Unsavory tasks must be performed in order to earn money and rise in the criminal underworld.

The gameplay mainly involves roaming around a city seen from above and breaking into different buildings. For example, there are banks to rob or vaults to break into, and gun shops where you can buy new guns or train your gang. "Mafia" features various settings such as car dealerships, gun shops, gangster pubs, subway stations, Chicago Police headquarters, casinos, train stations, banks, hotels, etc.
For each crime committed, points are earned, and authority in the underworld increases. As people's respect grows, the police become more dangerous. Therefore, starting with minor crimes becomes essential before moving on to major crimes.

There are also special missions, such as killing the mayor, transporting cash or gold bars at the Main Street Bank, and dealing weapons.
Drunkeneye commented: "Clearly, as an A8 beginner, I had some trouble creating a 1:1 port; hence the map looks quite different. However, the rest should be pretty close to the original (given that I had the BASIC sources available)."
The author warns that there may still be serious bugs and he is not sure if loading/saving will work as expected. Since he has not played it fully, it is unclear if the game is winnable.

Plus, there's not even sound. "I'm not sure how long it will take to polish them; help is welcome (...) I have no idea if this will work on real hardware,"said on the AtariAge forum
It should be noted that the original German version of "Mafia" was published in 1986, and the English version in 2010.
