The Atari 8-bit adventure "Tony: Montezuma's Gold" continues to be refined, thanks to valuable feedback from the AtariOnline and AtariAge communities.

Since their initial demo, Vladimir "Popmilo" Janković (Serbia) and Rafał Dudek (Poland) have released nine versions, implementing significant improvements that address technical issues and gameplay suggestions.

"Popmilo" has shared insights into improvements implemented based on user feedback. One highlight is the option to press the shutter button to skip parts of the presentation for a smoother experience.

Compatibility issues have been resolved, specifically between the RMT used for composing melodies and the version used for exporting compressed sequences. Additionally, a bug in the file header that previously caused problems has been overcome.

Likewise, visual glitches involving Tony's character, particularly during ladder climbing, have been fixed, resulting in a polished visual presentation. Additionally, other gameplay-related issues have been resolved, such as challenges with jumping over the edges of the screen onto spikes and pixel debris when enemies disappear. Additionally, the addition of fade-out transitions improves the overall gameplay experience.

Driven by player feedback, changes have been implemented to the challenges posed by the symbols on the final doors. These symbols were removed, given the difficulty in deciphering them. In their place, a "key mask" mechanism has been incorporated for the final doors.

Long-term vision and commitment to quality bode well for the future of this series in the Atari community. As for the further development of “Tony”, Janković has announced that standard Atari keys (such as OPTION or SELECT) will be used for interactive controls in the final version.

The upcoming release will be on disk, with a proper loader. This decision is motivated by the complexity of the game, which includes multiple parts similar to the C64 version. Additionally, to create an even more immersive experience, new sound effects will be incorporated into the final game. The developers are actively working on coding routines to bring these effects to life.

As for memory considerations, while 64KB of RAM is generally sufficient and functional in most cases, efforts are being made to ensure that the final game will run on as many machines as possible without the need for memory expansions.
Dudek has revealed that “Tony” will be the first installment of a trilogy, adjusting the difficulty to make the experience challenging but fair. “Montezuma's Gold” will be followed by subsequent titles, namely “Ark of Covenant” and “Shimazu Masamune´s Katana.”

Stay tuned for future updates on “Tony,” as the author’s long-term vision and commitment to quality promise a bright future for this series within the Atari 8-bit community.
