A8DS 3.8 is the latest version of the Atari 8-bit emulator designed specifically for the Nintendo DS/DSi handheld console. This version follows the previous one released in June 2023 and promises significant improvements for fans of the classic Atari XL/XE series computers.

A8DS is an emulator that mimics the Atari 800XL and 130XE computers, targeting systems with various hardware extensions for increased memory. Developed by Dave "Wavemotion" Bernazzani (USA), it is based on the Atari800 emulator - originally created by David Firth under a free license (GPL).

This emulator supports multi-disc gaming, allowing users to load subsequent discs into a game by pressing the Y button. It supports .ATR format disc images up to 360K; although its author estimates that it may work with larger capacity discs.

A distinctive feature of the A8DS is its support for Altirra BASIC 1.58, a replacement for Atari Basic Rev C. Although this can normally be left disabled, some games require the BASIC cartridge to be present; this option can be activated with the START button when loading a game.

Other notable features include memory configurations from 48K to 1088K; support for cartridge-based games up to 1MB; Atari 8-bit XEX executable images; support for ATR and ATX disk-based games; support for NTSC and PAL; a virtual keyboard with Atari 800/XL/XE styles; and support for up to 10 high scores per game.

It also allows full remapping of the DS keys to any Atari 8-bit joystick, key or button, and the option to save and restore game state.

Version 3.8 includes minor tweaks and fixes, as well as a CPU override resulting in a 3% performance boost, especially useful for older DS models. It also introduces a new graphical overlay for "Star Raiders", improving the touchscreen gaming experience.

To install A8DS on DS or DSi (including 2DS/3DS), the ability to launch is required.homebrewsOn older DS models this is usually achieved with a FlashCart such as the R4, while on the DSi or higher models you can opt for a software modification and run applications such as Twilight Menu++ or Unlaunch.
The DSi, with its convenient SD card slot, makes it easy to enjoyhomebrewsFor maximum compatibility, the optional BIOS files are recommended, available in the BIOS section of the A8DS GitHub page.

It should be remembered that the Nintendo DSi is a revision of the Nintendo DS Lite model, launched in Japan on November 1, 2008 and later in Australia, Europe, the United States and Latin America between April and May 2009.
