The update of "Der Schränker 1" for Atari 8-bit computers brings with it significant improvements in the dynamics and difficulty of the game.

The game, whose name translates from German as "The Closet," puts us in the role of a lone thief tasked with breaking into a series of safes to loot all the loot before advancing to the next level.

Janko "Kveldulfur" Grewe, the game's creator in collaboration with M.L. Webel (music), explained: "It's the first game I wrote for the ATARI XL/XE and my first experience programming in assembler. It has a special meaning for me, but was criticized for two main reasons: the random movement of the ghosts which sometimes hindered progress, and the randomness in the loot distribution which made some levels too easy or too difficult."
In this version of “Der Schränker 1.1”, Grewe has optimized the mechanics for attracting ghosts, allowing players to direct them more efficiently. In addition, loot is now distributed in a more controlled and predictable way, adjusted to the four available difficulty levels.

Among other improvements, support for German and English has been incorporated, with automatic selection according to the system (PAL or NTSC) and the option of manual switching in the menu using the HELP key. Additionally, the code has been optimized and compressed, allowing the game to be used as a 16k cartridge.

It is worth noting that “Der Schränker 1” took thirteenth place in the Atari Bit Byter User Club (ABBUC) retro contest in 2022; and it has a sequel titled “Der Schränker 2”, which reached eighth place in the same competition.
