The competition begins! Meet the thirteen games that will participate in this year's prestigious Atari Bit Byter User Club (ABBUC) 2022 retro contest.

We present the programs in the order of registration made by Holger "Holgibo" Bommer (Germany):

    Moon Quest

Adventure game for Atari Basic by Michal "stRing" Radecki-Mikulicz, who previously contributed music to the logic puzzle game "Castle Defender", which took second place at the ABBUC 2019 competition. Radecki also contributed the melodies and sound effects to "Assembloids XE", which took second place in the German club competition in 2013, and most recently to "Troll's Treasure", which was presented at the Silly Venture 2021 Winter Edition.

    Retro Dschump

Peter "RetroCoder" Hinz is competing with a port of the game he originally wrote in the early 1990s for the PC. "Dschump" was written in 6502 assembler using ATasm - a command-line-based 6502 cross-assembler that is compatible with the 1982 OSS.

"There's a game called 'Jump!' that I wrote about in a magazine many, many moons ago, so the German distributors thought 'Dschump' would sound like jump and the name stuck."

Control the ball to stay on the surface - although some holes transport you to other places. Fill your energy bar to do super jumps. Hit the switches to change direction and the FINAL tile to finish the level - there are 16 stages in total.

Hinz details that he made the graphics from scratch using the Atari FontMaker tool, while the sprite animation was done in a modified version of Piskel. The Raster Music Tracker (RMT) platform was also used for the music, which was added by Michal "Miker" Szpilowski. He also wrote a level editor in C#, which he will share in the future.

    The PACMeN-evolution

Lars "T.A.T" Langhans -who also goes by the nickname "LarsImNetz"- returns to ABBUC after two years. This time, with a clone of the classic Namco Pac-Man (1980), compatible with Atari 8bit 400/800, XL/XE with 48KB RAM, in PAL or NTSC systems.

Let's remember that Langhans took fourth place at ABBUC 2020 with the spaceship game "Oxygene Be/Part #2" and also excelled with the demo "Twiddles!".

    Der Schränker 1

Coded by J. "Kveldulfur" Grewe and featuring music by M.L. Webel, "Der Schränker" (which translates from German as The Closet) puts you in the role of a lone thief, tasked with breaking into a series of safes to steal all the loot before moving on to the next level.

    Der Schränker 2

In this sequel, you not only have to find a series of keys to open safes and collect loot, but unlike the first game, you can also climb ladders and shoot enemies - like the ghosts that haunt a spooky castle.

    Battle of Eris

Programmed by Peter Prodehl with music by Matthias Webel and Thomas Allen, it is presented, indirectly, as a sequel to Caverns of Mars (Atari, 1981).

The winners will be announced at the ABBUC annual meeting on 29 October in Herten, Germany. The prize money for this year amounts to 2,850 euros.

In the second part of this article we will complete the information on the other ABBUC 2022 contestants.
