Janusz "Shanti77" Chabowski (Poland) has published a new port update for Atari 8-bit computers of the classic game «Commando» (Capcom, 1985), based on the code of the Commodore 64 version.

This time, Chabowski includes a fourth level to the conversion - using the VBXE graphics card. This hardware generates high-quality RGB images, with a resolution of up to 640x480i; and allows 1024 colors from a 21-bit palette.

While the original version written by Chris Butler featured three levels, this update takes the fourth stage from the 2014 homebrew version, which recreates all eight zones of the arcade game.

On the AtariOnline forum, "Shanti77" explained that the main problem with the conversion arose when replacing the C64's 256-character set with several 127-character sets on the Atari. "Using them alternately, I was able to complete the first four levels; but to make it work with the others, I would have to go up to ten to twelve sets."

"In total, there are 2 blits, because the first one prepares the character addresses and the image in the second block that actually draws them. It draws 40 characters on 21 lines, the characters could be additionally redrawn in high resolution (...) there is one additional blit left to draw 16 sprites and you can transfer the whole new version (8 levels). There will only be one problem with drawing sprites under the game board (so that they are covered - for example, trees), but I don't know how to solve it." Hopefully I'll succeed and be able to enjoy all the arcade action on the small Atari XL/XE.
