After remaining unpublished for 39 years, "Cave Crusader", a spaceship game developed by Michele "Micky" Bina (Italy) for Atari 8-bit computers, was recovered this week.
This is ashoot 'em upA horizontally-advanced game developed in assembler and Forth language, with over 110 screens divided into nine levels. The objective is to overcome as many stages as possible to save the maiden imprisoned deep within a space fortress.
The program was one of the winners of the first edition of the "Computer Play" competition organized by the Associazione Italiana per il Calcolo Automatico (Italian Association for Automatic Computing - AICA) and held in Milan on December 2 and 3, 1983.
While the game was reviewed in theIssue No. 17 of the magazine "Videogiochi"in July 1984 and Bina interviewed in theFirst issue of "Home Computer"In May 1984, "Cave Crusader" was never released.
Through the Atari World Italia group, Filippo "Philsan" Santellocco recalled that he was able to contact the author of the game in 2013. However, not even Bina himself had a copy. Fortunately,the Atarimania portalHe discovered it in a collection of old pirated software belonging to a French user.

- The game requires OS-A, otherwise it will freeze. Altirra emulator users can configure it in the path: System > Configure System > Firmware > Operating system > Atari 400/800 OS-A PAL.
- On the opening screen you can choose between three game speeds. You can also choose whether to start the game in the first stage with nine lives or in the third stage with six lives.
- Press the space bar to pause the action.
