News from the port in development of «Elite» (Acornsoft, 1984), the acclaimed trading and space combat video game, for Atari 8-bit computers.
The project dates back to February 2019, when Vladimir "Popmilo" Jankovic (Serbia) commented on the AtariAge forum that Mark "Wrathchild" Keates (England) was "behind one of the best attempts at porting ("Elite") to the Atari" XL/XE series. In response, Keates shared the following image and said that "the A8's keyboard is still not ideally suited for gaming" and that he still needs to work out some issues with drawing routines.
In December 2019, "Wrathchild" released a first video of the port, which demonstrated the ability to launch from Lave Station and hyperspace to another planet. There was no further news since September 2020; until late last September he stated that he had Jankovic and Karolj "Heaven" Nadj (Germany) participating in his project.
Finally, he shared an update on his YouTube channel on Friday. "I've managed to fix the planet rendering, but the scanner intro seems to highlight something very strange going on with objects moving too much; and this seems to be corrupting things and causing random crashes."
"As you can see, the stars are not following their proper trajectories either and also the space station should be visible in the rear view, but it is not. So there is still a bit to work out, sorry," Keates says in the video description.
It should be noted, however, that "Wrathchild" himself prefers not to set a release date for the port. "I tend not to make promises because I'm not that reliable as I get distracted by other shiny things (read: ports); and I pick and choose what I do."
