Futuristic action in a 3D environment is the premise of "Final Assault", an amazing first-person shooter (FPS) game for the Atari XL/XE series computers.

The plot takes place in the year 2099: you play a cybernetically enhanced super soldier, leader of the 31st Augmented Force Reconnaissance Squadron. You are part of the United Humanity's Armed Forces Central Command, a coalition of countries fighting against the crazed artificial intelligence. Your mission: infiltrate an old research facility and search for a chip that could decide the fate of this war.

To face the waves of enemy robots of different types - including flying mines and level bosses - you have an arsenal consisting of a pistol, pulse rifle, shotgun, rocket launcher and even the legendary BFG vaporizer (Big F*cking Gun), well known in other games of the genre.

You will also be equipped with a proximity detector - whose sound alerts you will have to learn in order to survive. You will also be able to collect more than ten types of items such as key cards, ammunition, medical supplies, etc. apart from trophies.

One of the big surprises in Final Assault is the use of raycasting, a pseudo-three-dimensional graphics rendering technique based on the geometric ray tracing algorithm that was popular in the 1990s.

Other notable features include animated textures, lighting effects, destructible walls, a steering compass, and an automatic mapping system, not to mention the flashy and futuristic title screen, among other things.

In in theofficial game website, details the involvement of Robert "Globe" Pecnik (code, graphics), Marek "Marco" Chorvat (testing) and Marian "Goldmaster" Vybostok (music). All hail from Slovakia and are returning to the Atari scene after more than two decades.

"This was a kind of projectmaybe-it will work-maybe-it won't; and even when it was halfway through, it still wasn't 100% certain that we would finish it. So we preferred not to make any announcements, to avoid the pressure and disappointment if things didn't work out in the end," Pecnik said.in the AtariAge forum
