Explore hundreds of monster-filled screens until you rescue Princess Corrine, held captive by the evil sorcerer Una Cum.

    STORM

    Posted by: Mastertronic, 1986.
    Gender: Mazes, adventures.
Extra: 1 or 2 players, joystick.

    THE STORY

The warlock Una Cum has kidnapped Corrine, wife of the warrior prince Storm, and is holding her captive in his laboratory, deep within his underground lair, while he searches the surface for a legendary box called "The Fear."

Storm has enlisted the aid of his old comrade, the powerful wizard Agravain Undead, who leads the barbarian to the western edge of the land. There, he shows him a window in the ruined abbey - which looks out into another dimension of strange proportions.

The two spend a few days studying Una's defenses, whose home is an underground labyrinth filled with traps and guarded by her beastly minions.

    GAMEPLAY DYNAMICS

The mission is to find the three snake brooches that open the door to the laboratory where Uma is holding Corrine prisoner, and then rescue her.

The villain's dungeon consists of rooms connected by one or more doors. Each room contains spawners of creatures, ranging from armed guards to amoeba-like fungi. Any contact with these enemies drains your energy, represented by a countdown starting at 2000 points.

You have your high-powered sword to shoot them down - some require more than one hit to be destroyed. Generators can also be destroyed, preventing them from producing more spawns; but they respawn if you re-enter a room.

If two players participate in the game, when one leaves the room, the other has to follow through the same door.

    GAME SCREEN

The screen shows a perspective from above, so that only the head and shoulders of each character are visible.

When you enter each room, a description will be displayed at the top of the screen. It also provides information about various events - for example, finding magic items or food - and the status of the heroes.

The view of Una Cum's lair is partially obscured by boards on the ceiling, making it difficult to see the monsters and their generators.

    OBJECTS, TREASURES AND OTHERS

Inside the labyrinth you will find different objects, with specific uses:

Scrolls and Amulets: They will destroy all the monsters in the room.
Magic masks: They will destroy all the generators in the room. Agravain is the only one who can activate them.
Guess: They will remove walls blocking your path or create traps, randomly.
Food: recover 200 points of your energy.
Bottles of restorative liquid: will replenish 500 points of your energy.
    Armor: protects you from creatures.
Keys: they will open closed doors.
Chests with jewels: They give you one thousand (1000) points.
Snake brooches: You need three (3) to open the door to Una Cum's lab.

    PROS AND CONS

Pros One of the few Atari 8-bit games with two simultaneous players where they must collaborate and not compete with each other. A hundred rooms with colorful graphics to explore. Items and traps take the game beyond a simple mapping task. For a change, David Whittaker's melodyis one of the most memorable songs for the Atari 8-bit computers.
Cons Instead of the easier, direct controls, Storm forces you to aim in the right direction before you can move forward, which means you end up moving in the wrong direction at the wrong time. The "wooden ceiling" that hides your character at times and makes it more difficult to fight enemies.

    Storm - User Reviews

Awkward controls, a less than appealing perspective, and graphical details that can further hamper the action detract from what could be a challenging exploration game, which also offers a rare cooperative mode for both players.

    CURIOSITIES

    • Many sites are calling it "the poor man's Gauntlet": while the 1985 US Gold cassette version sold for £9.99, the Mastertronic version cost just £1.99.
    • Unlike in Gauntlet, in Storm you need things to progress in your mission.
    • Because of its perspective and gameplay dynamics, others consider it a clone of "Into the Eagle's Nest" (Atari, 1988).
    • It had versions for Atari, Commodore 64, MSX and ZX Spectrum. The version for C16 is limited to 40 rooms.
    • The full title of the game is «STORM - PART 1: A CUM'S LAIR».
    • Had a sequel on Amstrad CPC, called "Storm 2: The Fear", stars Silver - Agravain's daughter - and her beloved Prince Frost. Both try to prevent the villain Una Cum from taking possession of the artifact "The Fear", hidden in a monastery of hermit monks.
