Robert and Eric Anschuetz together with John Weisgerber bring us «Piracy 1821» and «Piracy 1621», assembly language games for the Atari 8-bit computers.

This is the sixth and seventh game of the 14 they plan to release by the end of the year, and they are assembler updates of BASIC games they wrote in the 1980s. "Both are being released as a pair because they were originally written as a sequel," they say.in the AtariAge forum

«Piracy 1981» - originally called Piracy - was one of the first games they wrote a few months after receiving their Atari 400 in 1981. The graphics were pretty crude, but the rules and gameplay were very complex.

To win, you must snatch 16 treasures from enemy ships and deposit them on any of the five available islands. The center island is your base, where you can replenish fuel and torpedoes, as well as take damage from battles. You lose if you run out of fuel; if you are rammed by an enemy ship; or if you accumulate 100 total damage.

The soundtrack is "15 Men on a Dead Man's Chest", also known as"Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum

"Piracy 1621" - originally dubbed Piracy II - dates back to 1986. "We used all the technical tricks we knew how to pull off in BASIC, including smooth horizontal and vertical scrolling (with machine language USR calls) and multiple screens that were just being explored in arcade games at the time," the authors note.

There are five islands from which you must collect treasure. First, you will have to defeat the black pirate ship guarding the right side of each island. Then you must navigate through a maze of obstacles to collect the treasure.

Dodge the enemy ship's cannonballs while shooting at the pirate moving around on top. If you get hit by a cannonball, you will lose a ship. When the barrier to the island disappears, you can dock your ship to start the treasure scene. The goal is to avoid the skulls and get to the top of the screen until you touch the pirate chest.

There is no scoring in the game: you either get all 5 treasures to win or you lose your 5 ships and die. The music for the three different screens are all pirate songs: "Sailing, SailingYo Ho Yo Ho a Pirate's Life for Me", and "What Shall I do with a Drunken Sailor?
