David "The 8-bit Guy" Murray has shared the first screenshots of the Atari 8-bit computer version of "Attack of the PETSCII Robots."
Originally released earlier this year for the (slow-moving) Commodore PET, this is a top-down action-puzzle game.
Robots have taken over human settlements on several planets. You must infiltrate and destroy all the androids, finding weapons, health kits, and keycards. Instead of shooting your way through, many scenarios will require the player to solve complex problems.
«Attack of the PETSCII Robots» features nine levels; three different types of enemy androids; and multiple objects such as revolvers, lasers, plasma weapons, electromagnetic pulse (EMP) guns, time bombs, among others.
Murray indicated that the opcodes are identical on Atari, Commodore and Apple. "The main things that have changed are the disk loading routines, the screen drawing routines and the keyboard input routines. Incidentally, there are now 6 versions of the game. All ports are made from the original PET version," he said in the release.private Facebook group of the project
Christian "Irgendwer" Krüger (Germany) is developing the version for the Atari XL/XE series computers, whose playing area will be monochrome due to the use of text mode. "This is a custom character set, so the graphics are a bit better than those of plain PETSCII. The main focus now will be on improving the sound effects and music," he commented onthe AtariAge forum
However, since the Atari's text mode supports both a foreground and background color, Irgendwer has managed to implement brief "bursts" of color. For example, the screen turns red when the protagonist takes damage; yellow for certain explosions; or flashes blue when using the EMP gun.
By the way, due to the extensive number of functions - such as searching and moving things, activating elevators and shooting in four directions - "Attack of the PETSCII Robots" cannot be played with a traditional joystick. Therefore, apart from using the keyboard, the game will be compatible with theSNES Atari Controller Kit (SNACK) project by Krüger
It should be remembered that PETSCII comes fromPET Standard Code of Information Interchange: the variation of the ASCII character set used on Commodore 8-bit computers, beginning with the PET (1977) and continuing through the VIC-20, C64, Plus/4, C16, and C128.
