SNACK: Use the SNES joystick on your Atari computer

SNES Atari Controler Kit (SNACK) is a project to connect the Super Nintendo gamepad to an Atari 8-bit computer.

Through theAtariAge Forum, Christian "Irgendwer" Krüger (Germany) revealed that he is working on an adapter that will make the SNES controller compatible with Atari XL/XE computers.

SNACK will have two operating modes: Classic and Enhanced. The first will make the SNES joystick behave identically to the standard Atari, while also adding the additional buttons.from the Joy 2B+ project. Separately, a third automatic fire button is considered.

Likewise, the side buttons are also assigned to the left and right, to improve the dynamics in certain games (such as classic pinball).

With Enhanced Mode (activated by pressing SELECT, START, and R on the SNES controller), Krüger notes that all of the gamepad's buttons are mapped to a single port, "in a rather clever but also user-friendly way." In practice, we could - for example - map the keyboard commands from Rescue on Fractalus! onto a single controller.

As if that were not enough, you can connect a"8bitdo Retro Receiver SNES", so that the “Irgendwer” adapter can immediately work with various controls via Bluetooth.

At the moment, SNACK only exists as a hand-wired prototype. However, the author is currently designing two models; one of which will have a more compact PCB, so that it fits inside a typical D-SUB 9 connector.

According to Irgendwer's calculations, the unit price of the adapter will be very cheap since the controller it uses costs less than a euro. Finally, he left open the possibility of presenting his initiative in the Atari Bit Byter User Club (ABBUC) 2021 retro contest for the hardware category.

Krüger warns thatSNES joysticks with Atari connectors are offered on the Internet. However, those are not really supported - and therefore do not work on hardware such as the XL/XE series computers.
