Atari: What's new in the beta version of the Altirra 4.0 emulator

Avery “Phaeron” Lee shared the beta version of Altirra 4.0, a popular Atari 8-bit computer emulator.
This upcoming update highlights improvements to the tape editor, which now features commands to convert selected ranges between standard (decoded bytes) and raw frequency shift keying (FSK) files, as well as to extract files stored in standard C: format.
It also has two analysis functions: the first is a tool that, when dragged over a selection, decodes and displays the corresponding bytes. The second is an option to capture dynamically decoded bytes via the POKEY chip.

Both features allow you to diagnose boot errors, which can then be repaired as clean standard data blocks by the emulator, at the correct baud rate and bit sampling time, and finally saved as a refurbished .CAS format file.
Likewise, the cassette editor's analysis tool now also has rudimentary Turbo 2000 decoding capabilities: the turbo decoder side of the tape can be viewed and edited, as well as displaying distortion in the source waveform due to high-frequency attenuation.

On the other hand, raw tape audio can now be loaded in FLAC format; a windowing issue in the audio low-pass filter has been fixed; and kernel interpolation has been added to the resampler, to reduce aliasing of ultrasonic audio (which causes you to hear sounds that should be imperceptible).
Finally, other improvements include a correction of a rounding issue in the high-level artifacting engine in PAL mode, which caused excessive bandwidth usage. And finally, if you try to burn a disc that does not yet have an image path set, the emulator will prompt you for the respective path and prevent saving dynamic discs.
