Łukasz "Luklab" Labuda (Poland) presented «City Defender», his second game developed for the Atari 8-bit computers and the first in the little-known Advan BASIC language.
As reportedon the AtariOnline portal, the task is to defend the city from falling asteroids. The higher the level, the larger the cities and the greater the number of rocks to destroy.
You have power-ups at your disposal, in the form of small green badges: a shield, to protect the city from at least two hits; a weapon that freezes meteorites; and a bomb, to destroy them en masse.
"City Defender" includes a bonus round that you can enter if no asteroids hit during the previous level; or if you shoot down the ships that pass by the screen. The game ends if the city is 100% destroyed (an asteroid causes 10 to 20% destruction) or if an asteroid hits you directly.

"Mostly, I wanted the smoothness of the animation and the gameplay itself. I think I achieved my goal considering it is BASIC after all. I spent some time on this project, first to get to know this compiler (a bit different from the others) and then to get it working as it should. Towards the end, there was an out-of-memory problem; so I had to optimize what I could, giving up on better sound effects or the cover art," Labuda explained.
Almost a year ago, "Luklab" published its first Atari game, written in Turbo Basic XL, called «Gry w linie» ("The Lines Game"). Advan BASIC is an Atari BASIC-compatible language with several extensions. Unlike most BASICs, Advan is a compiler, not an interpreter. As a result, it runs 10 to 15 times faster than Atari BASIC.
