8bit-Dungeon is a RPG-style tech demo written using the 8bit-Unity 0.4 SDK.
The demo of this adventure game - inspired by the classic Diablo (Blizzard, 1996) - shows how to take advantage of 8bit-Unity's new support for scrollable character maps along with sprites.
Anthony "8bit-Dude" Beaucamp - the creator of the SDK that runs on the Atari 8bit, Atari Lynx, C64, Apple // and Oric 1/Atmos - points out that despite its complexity, 8bit-Dungeon's code only takes up 500 lines.
8bit-Unity is the only cross-platform C language SDK for 8-bit computers that allows you to write a game or application just once, and then deploy it to all of the above platforms.
Additionally, the built-in asset pipeline makes it very easy to produce bitmaps, sprites and music. Beaucamp says the project is being released for free to encourage continued development of software for retro computers.
The latest version of the SDK, released on April 18, offers multiplexed sprites for Atari; and single and double-hire support for Apple2. You can download it atthe official website of the project, where there are also several tutorials.
Proof that 8-bit-Unity is becoming a very interesting tool for developers is that an online tournament was recently organized withthe racing game 8-bit Slicks-written with the same SDK- usingFujiNet device
