Bill Kendrick (USA) surprises us with Gem Drop Deluxe, a fast-paced puzzle game for the Atari 8-bit computers.
This is an updated version of the game that was released in 1997 in Action! language. According tocomment on the New Breed Software website, started developing this deluxe version in 2015, as a way to learn more about CC65.
You must remove the gems from the top of the screen by picking them up and then throwing them upwards, placing three or more in a vertical column. Once you have completed the number of "lines" of removed gems - shown on the left, below your current score - you can move on to the next level.
There are 20 unique levels in total. Levels 15 through 20 get harder because you have twice as many different gems to deal with. There are also a number of items that can help you in the match. To "activate" them, you need to throw two or more of the same gem at them.
Kendrick notes that, like the original, Gem Drop Deluxe uses a special graphics effect that switches between two images every frame to simulate more colors on the screen. The game runs on any Atari 8-bit computer with 48KB of RAM, including the 800 model.
