Meet the finalists and winner of the Atari 8-bit/5200: Best Homebrew category of the third edition of the Atari Homebrew Awards, a contest organized by ZeroPage Homebrew to choose the best "homemade" games developed for Atari consoles in 2020.

This time, there were a total of fourteen categories, most of them related to the Atari 2600 and Atari 7800 consoles. In the particular case of 8-bit computers, the jury evaluated 64 titles, six of which were nominated as finalists.

The public was able to vote for the six titlesfrom a forum on AtariAgeuntil January 31. The top three places were announced in a live broadcast on Saturday, February 6, hosted by husband and wife James and Tanya Earl O’Brien (Canada).

Second place went to “Disc O’Pop”, submitted by Christian “Irgendwer” Krüger, with 17 votes. Coincidentally, this game took the same place in the retro contest organized by the Atari Bit Byter User Club – ABBUC 2020 (Germany).

Last Squadron, a shoot’em up programmed by Janusz “Shanti77” Chabowski – and featuring sound effects and powerful melodies by Michal “Miker” Szpilowski – won with 46 votes.

Rounding out the list were Raymaze 2000 (10 votes), Biscuits in Hell! (9 votes) and Runner Bear (5 votes). It should be noted that, in total, the Best Complete Homebrew for Atari 8-bit/5200 category accumulated 99 votes.
