The BASIC 10 Liner 2021 competition rules are now available. This is the tenth edition of the competition that annually recognizes the best game programmed in BASIC for any 8-bit computer, with a maximum of ten lines of code.
As in previous editions, participants will be able to compete in the categories “PUR-80” (each line of code with a maximum of 80 characters); “PUR-120” (maximum 120 characters per logical line); and “EXTREME-256” (maximum 256 characters per line).
Additionally, the "SCHAU" category has been enabled for demos, tools and non-recreational applications with a limit of 256 characters per line). While programs submitted that do not comply with any of the above categories will be considered in the "WILD" section.
The deadline for submissions is Monday, March 28 at 18:00 (GMT). Voting, conducted by a panel of experts, will take place on Saturday, April 10, at the traditional NOMAM (derived from the phrase “Not Only Marvelous Atari Machinery”) meeting in the German town of Lübeck.
As a novelty, the organizers have implemented the special prize “Public Choice”: the images of the competing programs will be published on the contest Twitter account https://twitter.com/Basic10L, so that users can “vote” for their favorites by using the “Like” option.
For those with a memory who may be a bit confused, there was no competition in 2012, so 2020 marked the tenth anniversary of the BASIC 10Liner, but the 10th edition of the competition will only be held this year.
The last competition was a worthy anniversary. With no less than 170 registered programs, the popularity was incomparably high. We achieved more than twice as many entries as the previous year," says Gunnar "Bunsen" Kanold (Germany), the creator of the competition, on the official website of the competition.http://basic10liner.com
For his part, Victor "Vitoco" Parada (Chile)presented at the AtariAge forumhis first program for the contest: «Patrol», clearly inspired by the classic Moon Patrol (Atari, 1983). As he explains, it is «a playable improvement of a horizontally scrolling demo I wrote last year using the DLI function of Fastbasic» 4.3 made by his compatriot DMSC.
It is worth remembering that in 2020 a total of 174 programs for 26 different platforms competed, including 18 games for Atari 8-bit computers. «Vitoco» Parada has won in past editions of the BASIC Tenliners with his games «Wazers», «Repeat after Simona» (2020), «Mini Bros» (2019), «Pixelated Puzzle», «Space Ranger» (2017), «Invaders» and «Where’s my cheese?» (2016).
