    Gr9Lab, Photoshop for Atari computers

Can you imagine editing photos on an Atari computer using a program similar to the well-known Adobe Photoshop? Well, that is the premise of Gr9Lab, a surprising application designed for image processing on 8-bit Atari computers.

Written in MadPascal by user Amarok, who is making his debut in Atari programming, gr9Lab can process images in GR9 mode, with a resolution of 80x192 pixels.

We can perform simple operations such as rotating the image vertically and horizontally, modifying brightness and contrast, or more complex actions such as calculating the image histogram, applying various filters (such as the well-known Gaussian blur) and combining two images at the same time.

It is also possible to make adjustments to entire images or within a selected rectangular area. "The program is still in development but contains almost all the features planned so far," says Amarok on the AtariAge forum.

The author notes that while he has not yet tested his work on real hardware, the current version should work fine on a machine with 64kB of memory. Gr9Lab can also be used with ST mice and trackballs.

In the near future, other features will be included, such as an "undo" operation; alerting the user about a modified but unsaved image; taking advantage of the extended memory (for example, of an Atari model 130XE) to store more than two images; and, most notably, solving a problem that causes the computer to "hang" after closing the application.

As if that were not enough, Amarok offers the project source codes in your GitLab repositoryThere is also a Python script available which is used to convert images from png to gr9 format.
