Thirteen games for Atari 8-bit computers are competing this year in the ABBUC 2020, a prestigious retro contest organized by the German club Atari Bit Byter User Club.

In previous articles we have reviewed the shooters «Persistent» by Kamil «Gorgh» Trzaska, who won the ABBUC 2017 with his New Atari Game (NAG); and «Last Squadron» by Janusz «Shanti77» Chabowski -known for the excellent port of Bosconian for the XL/XE series computers.

This time, we bring you videos and information about four other games in the competition: «Detonationix», «Go Lucky», «They are many» and «Tree Simulator 4k».

    Detonationix

In just two days, Slovakian Martin “MatoSimi” Å imecek put together this game similar in appearance to the classic Tetris, where the pieces contain not only regular bricks but also bombs.

Explosives are detonated only if they are in a full line. The more full lines, the bigger the detonations. Each level starts with a particular layout of the playing field and the speed increases progressively.

    Go Lucky

After three months of coding, bug hunting and optimization, German Ralf “PPs” Patschke makes his debut on the retro contest with a board game with 25 different levels and unique money goals.

The program requires a computer with 64 kB and a disk drive; it also detects whether the machine has NTSC or PAL video mode; and whether it works with 50 or 60 Hz to adapt the color and speed of the music. By the way, the melody and sound effects are the work of renowned composer Michal "Miker" Szpilowski.

    They are many

Vladimir "popmilo" Jankovic is competing with what he defines as "a kind of real-time strategy game" where we must resist the attack of hordes of zombies that try to invade our property.

While enemies move randomly at first, as the game progresses they become stronger and more aggressive. The author admits that he ran out of time to complete some features - such as arrow shooters and better balancing the program.

    Tree Simulator 4k

In this unique program by Kamil "Gorgh" Trzaska, just 4 Kb long, we can influence the growth of a tree. For example, by directing the direction of the wind or the sun's rays; as well as pruning the branches to our liking.

"This is not a typical game, but an experimental project, because you can neither win nor lose. The tree grows to a certain point, and then you can admire its shape," says the prolific Polish programmer, who wrote this project in a week.

Registration for participants closed at the end of August. Organizers have informed Atariteca that the date of the annual meeting will be officially announced in the coming days.
