Our friend, the Polish Kamil «Gorgh» Trzaska, is presenting the remarkable «Persistent», a shooter game for Atari 8-bit computers, at the Atari Bit Byter User Club – ABBUC 2020 retro contest.
Speaking exclusively to Atariteca, Trzaska revealed that the idea for the game was inspired by a demonstration effect in which parallel lines moved in a perspective view, giving the illusion of movement.
“My friend Xeen (Marek Cora) showed me that demo and I thought it might be a cool idea for a game,” Gorgh explains, adding that the game field is moved by shifting the lines on the screen left and right.
"Persistent" runs at 50 FPS on machines with PAL video systems; unfortunately, the same was not possible on NTSC. "That's why the game runs at 30 FPS most of the time," he says.
The shooter has 7 levels: the first three are easier because there are not so many targets to destroy. Each level can be completed only by shooting down a certain number of enemies. In addition, it is important to collect bonuses that give you more lives and firepower.
The author says that the best strategy for a successful game is to try to get close to enemies so that we can shoot them down. By levels 4 to 7, it is possible to accumulate enough firepower to be able to hold down the fire button all the time.

“The game is quite difficult, but the levels always look the same so you can memorize them. I hope you like it!” concludes Kamil.
It should be noted that entries for ABBUC 2020 close on September 26. There are two categories: hardware and software. For this year, almost any type of program is allowed; but you cannot submit programs that have already been published. Also, the programs in the competition must be able to run on conventional Atari computers. Finally, the organizers have increased the prizes for the first three places.
