Nina's Diary is a new program that allows children to keep a personal diary using an Atari 8-bit computer.

"I wanted something simple for (my daughter) Nina, but also something small enough that I could replace the Missile Command ROM on the (Atari console) XEGS," explained American Thomas Cherryhomes.

The program is written in C; and, as mentioned before, must be burned to a cartridge - although since it only takes up 8k of memory, it works fine with any flash cartridge such as the well-known Ultimate 1MB.

This software stores the entries created consecutively, occupying 8 sectors each. It also allows us to format diskettes according to the hardware used: in the Atari 810 readers, up to 90 pages can be recorded per disk; in the classic Atari 1050, 130 pages; Indus GT, 180; and Atari XF-551, up to 360 pages.

It highlights the fact that the source code is available to the public absolutely freely, via the GitHub platform; so anyone can modify the program at their discretion.

"There are still about 3K free for an 8K cartridge, so there is plenty of room for new features. Anything is possible, that's why I released the source code. Everything I do is public."

Cherryhomes plans to release versions in COM and XEX formats. "One change I'll probably make is to add a volume bitmap, so you can have gaps in the pages and be able to keep track of them," he said.

It should be remembered that Cherryhomes isPLATOTerm author, PLATO customerwhich allows numerous retro computers - including Atari 8-bit computers - to connect to the IRATA.ONLINE server, which it also manages.
