We offer you videos, images and information about the eight games registered in the Atari Bit Byter User Club - ABBUC 2019 retro contest.

    601F

Kamil "Gorgh" Trzaska (code) and Michal "Caruso" Brzezicki (music) bring us this unique golf game in a 3D environment.

Trzaska explains that the main idea of the game evolvedfrom a project for Commodore 64"I thought about creating a dynamic 3D environment in an unusual way. Then I stopped working on this c64 title, because I had no more ideas on how to develop it further," he commented on the AtariAge forum.

"Gorgh" says that after the Forever Party festival he got the idea to use the program for a golf game. Within two days he was able to port the software engine to the Atari; then he had to solve two physics problems: make the ball roll on the ground with its slopes and simulate the corresponding bounce.

"It all involved a fairly sophisticated algorithm, and I can say that I'm proud of myself, even though there are sometimes some inaccuracies," he stressed. By the way, 601F features 10 regular levels to beat, and also a level creator where you can model the terrain.

    Block On Legs: First Steps

Jason "therealbountybob" Kendall enters the contest with this simple game where a checkered protagonist must jump across platforms to collect points.

"I had abandoned my project three months ago due to technical difficulties, time constraints and the lack of availability of my collaborator to design the graphics. But with a few days left until the deadline, I thought I would make a crazy effort to support the contest and see if I could put something together," he said regarding his project - which is still in development.

    Castle Defender

Port of a game originally released for BBC Micro and in which the Slovak Martin “MatoSimi” Šimecek participated together with Michal "stRing" Radecki, Piotr "Piesiu" Radecki, Chris Bradburne and John Blythe.

The player must stop the monsters from trying to enter the castle, placing a variety of weapons along the way.Castle DefenderIt stands out for its 43-color title screen; its high-quality and detailed graphics; the wide variety of enemies and maps; and a powerful soundtrack.

In late 2018, Šimecek expressed interest in developing such a conversion - given the CPU similarities between the Atari and BBC Micro. By March of this year, the program was nearly finished, with forum member José Pereira contributing the final graphical tweaks.

    Dungeon Hunt II

After five years, James "Jacobus" Wilkinson proposes the sequel to his first-person game, developed entirely in QUICK language, where we have the mission of exploring labyrinths and annihilating different types of enemies to accumulate experience and weapon points; unlock doors; and manage our health long enough to survive.

Each new level introduces more challenging monsters along with new maps and puzzles. This new version offers open spaces, improved graphics, new monsters and maps, multi-level mazes, better animation and gameplay, as well as a completely rewritten game engine.

    Full House Poker

Florian "Flo" Dingler (Germany) competes with this version of the classic card game for one participant. You start with $10. The computer deals five cards, of which you can change as many as you like, twice. If you win, you receive credits. The player can double, triple and quadruple his bet.

The currency can be exchanged: dollars, euros, pounds, yen; as well as zloty and Czech crowns. "As a tribute to our friends from Poland and the Czech Republic, who published huge amounts of software in the past years and kept our Ataris alive," Dingler emphasizes.

You can also change the color of the back of the cards.

    Multi10

Frantisek "Fandal" Houra (Poland) presents this recreational program for up to four players, based on the well-known 10x10 game. The goal is to clear rows or columns in a 10x10 grid by placing pieces - which do not fall down but appear on their respective boards.

Use the joystick up or down to select an item, then left or right to move it to the grid. If you want to select another item, simply move the joystick in the opposite direction for a short moment. Multi10 supports the multi-joy system and supports stereo sound.

    The Warriors

Vladimir "popmilo" Jankovic competes with this in-development beat'em up for two players, who must face off in a simple but fun fight. "It was planned to be a full-size game, but this is what you get just for trying it out," he said.

    Train 3

Czech company BAHA Software Group brings us a new conversion of Vlak, a free game originally released in 1993 by Miroslav Němeček for compatible computers. Very similar to the classicSnakeIn this game, players must drive a small cargo train around the screen, attempting to collect all the items before heading to the exit tunnel.

To win the game, you must finish all 25 screens. You also play for a high score: for each item collected, you are awarded 10 points. If you finish a screen, you accumulate 200 points for each remaining life. If you lose a life, 300 points are deducted. You gain a new life for every 5000 points.

Idea, music, sound effects, graphics and levels were done by Petr "HardCore" Postava; while the game engine in CC65/CA65 by Michael "Baktra" Kalous.

It is worth mentioning that, for this year, Frederik "freetz" Holst decided that there would be only one category for new programs (games, demos and utilities) as long as they could be run on Atari hardware (standard or modified).

There is a total of 2,000 euros to be distributed among the contestants based on the number of votes they receive on 26 October. For example, if a contestant receives 10% of the total votes, they will win 200 euros.
