Druidarium, second place in Silly Venture 2K18

Krzysztof "KK" Kluczek brings us "Druidarium", a unique action game with all-round scrolling for the Atari 8-bit computers.

The game puts us in the role of a druid who, overnight, has woken up in a world invaded by hordes of skeletons, ghosts and bats. His mission is to find scrolls and four magic orbs to restore peace.

Manuscripts increase the power of shots, while herbs regenerate the hero's energy.

Druidarium is still a title in development. At the moment, it only works in PAL video mode; there is even a typo on the intro screen, which was not corrected in a hurry.

Despite its limitations, it took second place at the Silly Venture 2018 retrofestival with 804 points. It is notable for the large size of the playing area, as well as the speed with which the protagonist moves.

Kluczek explained on the AtariAge forum that Druidarium uses three music channels, with the fourth reserved for future sound effects, and that he plans to improve the logic of the rivals on screen.

"The game wasn't really quick to make. There are 2 missile positions (4th missile can't be used) and they are updated every 2 scan lines, so explosions are done with missiles and this system allows for multiple spell shells (just the SV2k18 deadline didn't allow for adding more)," he said.

Druidarium can be run on any Atari computer with 64k RAM. The author plans to release an update where, for example, one of the opponents at the end can counterattack the druid.
