Moon Patrol Hack for Atari Computers

Users TIX and doctorclu from the AtariAge forum have teamed up to modify various graphical aspects of Moon Patrol, the classic horizontal shoot'em up (Atari, 1983).

"I always hated the original buggy sprite, but I loved the tank-like track wheels, so I decided to improve the vehicle's body with a modest graphical replacement," TIX noted.

For his part, doctorclu - who last yearModified Fast Eddie to replace him with the character of Bubsy- confirmed that the original designer worked with double and quadruple wide blocks.

After several tests, they managed to change the appearance of the space tank to bring it closer to the look of the arcade version. In the same spirit, they modified the colors and animation of the enemy flying saucers, as well as the color of the upper board.

"We didn't just change an ugly vehicle (sorry to the original programmers, they should have aligned that windshield better...) and made a set for people to create a whole catalogue of tanks with custom modifications," doctorclu points out.

It should be noted, however, that both are still trying to resolve some issues, such as the bug that flips text and graphics starting at level "L".
