Fabrizio Caruso recently published a version of hisCross Chase gamefor Atari 8-bit computers.
The Italian programmer managed to redefine the characters to incorporate graphics, which allow the recognition of the protagonist, power-ups, enemies and mines; in addition to increasing the number of colors on the screen to five. Cross Chase now has 40 levels.
Additionally, to balance the game, enemies move slightly slower, and the player receives an extra life after killing the skull every five levels - which requires five shots with the pistol.
Speaking to Atariteca, Caruso stressed that this is a free, open-source game for all eight-bit systems - including rare models such as the Mattel Aquarius, Jupiter Ace and VZ200 - and some consoles, including the Atari 5200.
Cross Chase is written in ANSI and recompiled for any 8-bit computer. The program has been designed to be compact; there is even a lighter version for computers with little RAM.

The author also points out that Cross Chase has been developed using what he calls "adaptive code". "This is not a normal game. The same code works on Atari, Commodore, Sinclair, MSX, Apple II, etc.," he stresses.
As if that weren't enough, the programmer revealed that there are many secret power-ups that are activated by the gun. For example, missile bases can be destroyed. "There are ways to accumulate lots of extra points and extra lives; and even become invincible."
In the future, Caruso hopes to incorporate a melody at the beginning of the game; and improve the graphics in all versions. "I'm working on it continuously; but I'm working on all versions at the same time," he said. All progress is being made.Available on GitHub platform
