This weekend, Avery "Phaeron" Lee released version 2.90 of Altirra, considered the best program for emulating Atari 8-bit computers, as well as the Atari 5200 and XEGS consoles.
Among the various new features, the support for emulating stands outthe Turbo 2000 system, which allowed programs and games to be loaded from tapes at twice the regular speed.
In terms of user interface, there is a borderless mode; screenshots with the correct aspect ratio; confirmation before resetting or shutting down the virtual computer; and improved artifacting and color palettes for NTSC video mode.
On the other hand,This Altirra reviewoffers full emulation of the most popular disk drive models, such as the Atari 810, 1050, US Doubler, Happy 810/1050, 1050 Turbo, Speedy 1050, XF551, Indus GT, and ATR8000 drives.
"Run original floppy drive firmware and utilities, including those that load custom code; view track buffering; LED displays; and even boot CP/M on the drive. Emulate multiple drives at once and perform multiple copy between them," says Lee.in the AtariAge forum
For Atari 5200 emulation, the built-in database now provides allocator types for popular cartridges, reducing the need to guess between single-chip and dual-chip 16K types.
Separately, the 65C816 CPU speed can now be changed without rebooting, color defaults have been updated, and a 16-bit surface area option is available for low-end graphics devices.
Let's not forget that Altirra can simulate the Atari 400/800, 1200XL, 600/800XL and 130XE computers completely and, what's more, with exact cycles; that is, with the same speeds as the original hardware - including peripherals such as disk and cassette players.
Altirra can be installed on any computer with a Pentium processor or higher (a minimum of 1GHz is recommended) and running Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 10 operating system in any of its versions (32-bit or x64 editions).
