Twenty-four years after the launch of its last video game console, Atari this week unveiled the first official images of the Ataribox. Can the company overcome the failure of the sophisticated Jaguar of 1993 and reach the popularity of the Atari 2600?

Let's remember that the AtariBox had a brief appearance at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 2017) last June. At that time, Frederic Chesnais, CEO of Atari, announced that the legendary company was "back in the hardware business."

So far, there are two models: one with a wood finish, inspired by the classic Atari 2600; and another in black with red details. Both versions offer support for SD cards, an HDMI port and four USB ports.

Unlike its competitors, the new console will support classic titles and a range of current content. "Our goal is to create something new, that stays true to our heritage, while appealing to both old and new Atari fans," the company said in an email newsletter.

"We've chosen to share things step by step as we bring Atari Box to life, and listen closely to feedback from the Atari community as we do so. There are a ton of milestones, challenges, and decision points ahead of us in the coming months. We'll be giving you lots more information and updates as we progress, and we're excited to have you along for the ride!" the post adds.

According to Eurogamer, a note in French indicates that the Atari Box will be initially funded as part of a fundraising campaign.crowdfundingUnlike Nintendo, which sold more than 2.3 million units of its Mini NES Classic Edition -even in advance- the company with the Fuji logo prefers to leave the success or failure of the project in the hands of consumers. Something risky in itself if we take into account the disappointment left by projects such as the Coleco Chameleon and the ZX Spectrum VEGA+.
