Atari: Graphics and font improvements for Silent Service and Leader Board

Paul "Mr. Fish" Fisher improved the graphics and edited the fonts of the beloved«Silent Service»(Microprose, 1985) and Leaderboard Golf (Access Software, 1986) for Atari 8-bit computers.

For the submarine simulator, Fisher slightly reduced the typography, as well as optimizing the characters, numbers, and valve colors for better readability.

Likewise, it replaced the yellow color of the PAL version to be displayed in green as in the NTSC version.

"The entire game actually has weird color schemes. I assume because they couldn't use PMs, they decided to vary the colors throughout the game. It's not a bad idea conceptually, but then you have to make good choices to make it work," he said.

Likewise, "Mr. Fish" varied the colors of the bridge to match other spaces in the game. "Changing the room to the gray, white, and black scheme used in the Commodore C64 version is no problem. But a completely gray room would look boring - so they played with colors, I'm sure (...) Actually, I think the color scheme for that space wasn't all that bad. It was unique, and at least it didn't look as ridiculous as the purple on the valve screen."

Finally, Fisher applied similar modifications to the golf simulator: he decreased the font size so that the text would fit better when opening the selection boxes; he inserted larger numbers for the score table; and he changed the spacing between the lines of characters, among other improvements.
