After almost nine months of work, prolific Polish programmer Mariusz "mariuszw" Wojcieszek published theFinal version of “Gunfright”, port for Atari XL/XE computersfrom the isometric game Ultimate Play the Game (1985).
This conversion requires a computer with 64 Kb of RAM. It runs on both PAL and NTSC systems. It even runs efficiently on computers with hardware upgrades.
Saul Cross (his first foray into POKEY music) and Jose Pereira (loading screen and colorization) were involved in the project. For those who find the game too difficult, Wojcieszek included a trainer mode that is activated by pressing different keys.
Via the AtariAge forum, Wojcieszek noted that with this particular game he had to solve several problems when porting and debugging the code from the original Z80 Spectrum to the Atari 6502. In addition, optimizing it was another challenge, as the automatic software "translation" left no room for entering Atari language.
"With Gunfright I had a lot of work because (the original authors) had optimized every piece of code that rendered (images on the screen), erasing and copying to achieve good performance. I had to do the same for (the chip) 6502," he stressed.
"But I really enjoyed the process and I certainly want to continue with other Z80 to 6502 conversions," adds "mariuszw", who said that on his preliminary list is Batman (Ocean Software Ltd., 1986)"But I want to take a break from isometrics for now," he concluded.
This is about thesixth port of "mariuszw"in the last two years. Before that he published the following conversions:«Fairlight: A Prelude»(EDGE, 1985);«Bobby Bearing»(The Edge, 1986);«Pentagram»(Ultimate Play the Game, 1986);«Saboteur!»(Durell Software, 1986); and«The Great Escape»(Ocean, 1986).
