Using reverse engineering, Lorenz Wiest was able to reproduce the complete and fully documented code of the classic shooter "Star Raiders" (Atari, 1979).
As reported in the AtariAge forum, Wiest has spent the last few years rebuilding the code directly from the binary file on the cartridge. This enabled him to have a first version completed in September 2015.
He subsequently conducted a review after theOriginal code was released in October 2015"To my delight, inspection of the original source code confirmed the findings in my version and resulted in only a few simple fixes. Furthermore, the documentation of my reverse-engineered version adds a substantial amount of information," Wiest emphasizes.
"You might find this useful if you're curious about the internals of Star Raiders, or if you're planning to make your own, modified version," he added.
