Víctor "Vitoco" Parada (Chile) obtained a meritorious third place in the Atari Bit Byter User Club - ABBUC 2015 retro contest, with his first 100% assembly language game: Toy'Swap.

The project dates back to mid-2014, when "Vitoco" commented on the Retronia forum about his interest in making a port of «Food Swap»for Atari 8-bit computers.

In his websiteParada explains that this game was not programmed on a real Atari nor on an emulator, but rather using a cross-compiler; that is, a compiler that runs on a Windows PC and generates 8-bit Atari executables.

"This made it quicker and easier to do proofs of concept for my idea," he says, adding that it took about 99 programming sessions, "some of them just a few minutes long, but most of them between 2 and 5 hours."

Toy'Swap uses ANTIC 4 mode for graphics and ANTIC 6 for under-dash counters. The fonts were created using FontMaker software by Slovak programmer Martin "MatoSimi" Šimecek.

As for the music, he turned to the Raster Music Tracker (RMT) in an attempt to recreate the music of “Food Swap.” He also acknowledges that his project became a variation of the original game, as he added different elements and changed the rules.

«Toy'Swap» can be run on real NTSC or PAL hardware, with any game controller (joystick, trackball, light gun, keyboard or ST mouse). Note that on NTSC mode computers, the music is 1/5 faster than on PAL machines; however, the game timers are the same for both systems.
